Pat McAfee shares how Paul Heyman helped him prepare for a promo with Austin Theory.
In the spring of 2022, it was revealed that Pat McAfee would not only be commentating at WrestleMania 38, but he would be facing off with Austin Theory in singles action. The match was given to McAfee by Vince McMahon, who at the time was serving as a mentor to Theory.
During a heated segment in the buildup to WrestleMania, Theory demanded an apology from McAfee for attacking him previously. While speaking on Friday's edition of The Pat McAfee show, Pat shared that Paul Heyman helped him with his promo before the segment.
"When I was having my run with Austin Theory, who I beat. There was a night where I was going to answer Austin Theory, he was going to ask me to apologize or something like that. Wiseman heard me in the corner thinking about how I was going to do it. He then just like, literally stops me, and says three lines. He’s like, ‘You’re sorry that his mom made a bitch, right? You’re sorry that he is insufferable, right? You’re sorry that he is the worst human being, right?’ I go, ‘I am sorry about all those things.’ He goes, ‘Precisely.’ Then he just walked away. I go out there, take all his shit, and the internet is like, ‘Pat is one of the best promos in the game.’ I told Paul, ‘I’m going on my show tomorrow and I’m saying you’re the one who told me that. I don’t want to get your pop.’ He goes, ‘No, at some point later.’ Today is the day. We all appreciate the hell out of you, congrats on going into the Hall of Fame."
McAfee would go on to defeat Theory at WrestleMania before losing to Vince McMahon in an impromptu singles match. After that bout, Stone Cold Steve Austin would arrive with stunners for all three men.
