Persephone Defends Decision To Go Maskless In 2023, Wanted To Show Off Her Facial Expressions

Persephone explains her decision to not wear a mask.

In 2023, Persephone made the choice to begin wrestling without a mask. At the time, this was a bold decision that ended up turning a relatively unknown star into a household name in Mexico.

Speaking with Fightful’s Sean Ross Sapp for a new interview, the 24-year-old luchadora explained her choice in detail.

“I loved it. I was 100% confident when I made this decision. I always knew that it was something that I would probably benefit from and I knew I could do it well. Every now and then I make faces. I don’t know every now and then I am pretty expressive. So with the mask on, don’t get me wrong, I loved my mask and I still have so many masks here on display and everything There are some people that ask for it, but I would watch myself back, like if I did a promo or an interview and I knew for a fact that in that moment I was making faces and I was doing this and I was doing that, but with a mask on you couldn’t see it. So I would kind of feel like I was a little bit limited in that something that I could showcase and help connect with people and show that more emotional side of either being mad or upset or annoyed or whatever it is, I couldn’t really do that with a mask. So I knew 100% that this was the move. I know a lot of people in that moment when I told them, they were probably like, ‘No, what do mean? You can’t do that.’ ‘Cause in lucha libre culture and Mexican wrestling, that’s just not what you do. You don’t take off your mask, you defend it with honor, like that’s your life, your mask is your identity. So the idea of just taking it off was not one that people liked, but I knew it was gonna take off and it has. I think it’s been probably one of my best decisions in my career and it’s been a blast working without it.”
