Report: Io Shirai's WWE Contract Expires Next Month

Io Shirai could reportedly be a free agent soon.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer, Io Shirai's contract with WWE expires next month and she has yet to sign a new deal. Meltzer reports, "She had told people in Japan that when her contract was up she wanted to return to Japan and be closer with her family."

Shirai has not wrestled since NXT Stand & Deliver when she competed in a four-way against Cora Jade, Kay Lee Ray (Alba Fyre), and Mandy Rose.

Fightful Select published the following report on Shirai on June 4, noting she is currently out of action with an injury:

Shirai has been out of action for two months since NXT Stand and Deliver, and hasn't been seen on NXT TV. After numerous inquiries over that period, a WWE source confirmed that she's been sidelined with an injury, but didn't elaborate on the severity of it or what it was. They also confirmed that for the time being she'd not been factored into creative plans in any way.

Shirai is well liked among the NXT locker room, and WWE in general. The WWE sources that we spoke to said that they were hopeful she'd be healed up "in the summer," but that's hardly a guarantee.

Fightful will update fans on Shirai's status when more is known.
