One of the original stars of Lucha Underground is expected to start in WWE in the coming weeks.

Per a report from Dave Meltzer in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (subscription required), King Cuerno (real name Jorge Alcantar), is heading to the WWE Performance Center in September. Meltzer also reported that there has been rumblings of a number "major names" also starting in WWE next month.

WWE has had its eye on Cuerno since the very first season of Lucha Underground due to his solid workrate as an in-ring performer and ability to speak English. Cuerno was unable to leave Lucha Underground as his contract with the show restricted him from being able to wrestle for WWE or other top promotions for years. Cuerno, also known as El Hijo del Fantasma, was one of several wrestlers who filed a class action lawsuit against El Rey Network and Lucha Underground’s production company Baba-G Productions for illegally restricting wrestlers from engaging in their profession in violation of California law.

As such, Cuerno remained on the show throughout the entirety of its run so far, winning the Gift of the Gods title in the second season. During his time wrestling in Mexico, he competed for both AAA and CMLL, winning a number of championships throughout his run with both companies.

Cuerno would be just the latest wrestler from the El Rey show to head to WWE in recent months. Other prominent wrestlers from Lucha Underground who eventually made their way to WWE include Ricochet (who played Prince Puma on the show) and Rey Mysterio, who briefly wrestled on Lucha Underground before returning to WWE.
