Rey Mysterio retained the WWE United States Championship at WWE Payback, defeating Austin Theory.
The finish saw Rey go for the slingshot splash after the 619, but Theory block it by getting his knees up. Theory picked up Rey for the A Town Down, but Rey countered with a victory roll to score the win.

Theory earned his title shot by defeating LA Knight in a number one contender's bout on the August 18 episode of WWE SmackDown.
This marked the first successful title defense for Mysterio. He won the title from Theory on the August 11 episode of WWE SmackDown.
