Riddle Says He And Pete Dunne Weren't Supposed To Win 2020 NXT Dusty Rhodes Tag Classic

Riddle and Pete Dunne were an odd couple in NXT, but the duo made the pairing work as they went on to win the 2020 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic and the NXT Tag Team Championships.

According to Riddle, their championship victory was never supposed to happen.

"We weren't supposed to," Riddle told Mark Andrews on My Love Letter to Wrestling when speaking about winning the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic.

Riddle continued by saying, "I didn't even know I was teaming with Pete until they said, 'Hey Matt, can you cut a promo saying how you and Pete met and became a team.' I was like, 'we're a teaming?' I made up some story where I was like, 'Pete, you're a bruiserweight, I'm a bro. Dusty Cup. Let's do this.' That was the promo. They shared it and the crowd went crazy. I don't even know if we were supposed to beat you guys and then they were like, 'hey, you're actually going to win this round and lose the next round.' We're like, 'okay.' The next round they were like, 'you're actually going to win this round too and go to the finals.' 'Alllright.' When we won it, I was pretty shocked, and I was like, 'Okay guys, what are we doing here?' It was a lot fun. I didn't see it coming."

The partnership between Riddle and Dunne came to an abrupt end when Dunne was stuck overseas at the start of the pandemic. Timothy Thatcher replaced Dunne on the team, which led to Riddle & Thatcher losing the NXT Tag Team Titles and kicked off a feud between Riddle and Thatcher.

Riddle is now aligned with Randy Orton on WWE TV, though their partnership was not supposed to last long. You can find his comments on the original plans for his partnership with Randy by clicking here.
