Rocky Romero Thinks NJPW New Beginning USA Card Is ‘The Best Card That We’ve Put Together In Quite A While’

Rocky Romero talks NJPW New Beginning USA.

On Friday, February 27, the promotion will bring their The New Beginning event to the CURE Insurance Arena in Trenton, New Jersey. The card is stacked with top names like Konosuke Takeshita, Andrade El Idolo, Athena, Tomohiro Ishii, David Finlay, and Yota Tsuji.

Speaking with Fightful for a new interview, Romero hyped up the lineup as the “best card that we’ve put together in quite a while”.

“I’m very excited about this card. I think this is the best card that we’ve put together in quite a while. I know a lot of people were thinking that New Japan wasn’t going to come back to America, but I think we came back with a bang and we’ve got over 2000 tickets out already. I think that we’ll hopefully get close to 3k this Friday. I’m just super pumped. It’s a hell of a card. A lot of first time match ups. Ricochet versus Taiji Ishimori, which for some reason has never happened. So I’m excited about that. Not a first time ever, but Oleg Boltin versus Ishii should be insane. The American debut of the Knock Out Brothers versus Gates of Agony. I’m very excited for that one. I think that one might steal the show as well. So you’ve got multiple matches that could possibly steal the show. I think it’s going to be a great debut in New Jersey. If you’re not far, I know weather is a little bit of an issue this week, but I hope people will make it out.”

Romero was then asked about the NJPW World Television Championship match between El Phantasmo and Konosuke Takeshita.

“Great rivalry. They’ve had probably some of my favorite matches in New Japan in the last couple of years. It’s always great to see that rivalry keep going and keep brewing in NJPW.”

Then, Romero talked about the amount of AEW talent that will be featured on the show.

“Yeah, there’s quite a few match ups that way between both companies, but AEW is a strong partner for New Japan. If we weren’t in Fantasticamania right now in Japan, we would have had more CMLL talent as well. So this is a great opportunity. Obviously everything kind of serves a purpose and I think Ricochet has been defending the National title in all kinds of places, the House of Glory and other places. So it made sense for him to come to New Japan where he had a great career and him coming back to wrestle Ishimori, I think was cool. Obviously Athena versus Syuri is one of those matches that I think everybody’s been waiting for and clamoring for and then finally here it is. It could have easily had been on Forbidden Door. That’s a huge Forbidden Door match. So I’m glad that we got it, though, to be honest.”

Elsewhere in the interview, Rocky Romero spoke about AJ Styles and his recent retirement segment. Fans can check out his full comments by clicking here.
