Roman Reigns' WWE Universal Title Run Surpasses Bruno Sammartino's Second WWWF Title Reign

Roman Reigns passes yet another record.

At 1,238 days as the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion, Roman Reigns has now passed Bruno Sammartino's second reign with the WWE Championship and is now the fourth longest reigning WWE Champion in history.

Currently, the title that Roman holds is carrying the legacy of both the WWE Championship and the WWE Universal Championship. Roman unified in the Championships back at WrestleMania 38 in 2022 when he defeated Brock Lesnar. On WWE's official website, the championships are still listed with separate lineages, but they are represented by one title.

Roman Reigns captured the WWE Universal Title back at WWE Payback 2020 when he defeated both Braun Strowman and Bray Wyatt. Over the last three and a half years, Reigns has defeated everyone from Bryan Danielson (Daniel Bryan) and Edge to John Cena and Cody Rhodes.

His next championship defense will take place at the 2024 Royal Rumble when he is challenged by AJ Styles, Randy Orton, and LA Knight in a Fatal 4-Way Match at the WWE Royal Rumble.

Roman now looks to surpass Hulk Hogan's 1988 WWE Championship reign of 1,474 days, just four days longer than Bob Backlund's first WWE Championship reign which began in 1979. He will be able to pass this record should he still be the champion in September.

However, Roman has many people on his tail, including a recently returned Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Learn more about The Rock's recent WWE return here.
