Bryan Danielson vs Will Ospreay: This Is Real

Much has been made about Shawn Michaels’ original exit from WWE in 1998, including many stories about The Undertaker watching the match from gorilla position with taped fists so that he would be able to take matters into his own hands if Shawn Michaels decided to “go into business for himself.”

Now, Triple H is setting the record straight on Shawn Michaels' mindset going into the match that anointed Stone Cold Steve Austin as the top superstar in WWE.

Speaking on the Shawn Michaels A&E Biography, Triple H reflected on why Shawn Michaels was so angry going into that evening and revealed the most messed up thing that Shawn Michaels ever said. According to Triple H, Shawn Michaels once wished he overdosed following WrestleMania 10.

“He was bitter. It had nothing to do with him losing, it had to do with being replaced. He never had his moment. He never had his run. ‘I'm still the greatest here, now it's his run. What do I do? Now I'm the backup guy?,’” Triple H recalled when reflecting on Shawn Michaels’ mindset going into WrestleMania 14 in 1998.

Triple H continued, “One of the most messed up things I ever heard Shawn say in his life was, I should have taken so many pills I died after WrestleMania 10. I would have been the biggest star of all time. I would have been Elvis.”

Of course, even though Shawn Michaels retired for four years after WrestleMania 14, he would ultimately come back in 2002 and have another near-decade-long run in WWE.

Elsewhere in the documentary, Vince McMahon himself stated that he believes Shawn Michaels owes his life to Triple H. Learn more here.
