Shawn Spears Says Cody Told Him To "Swing For The Fences" With Unprotected Chair Shot In 2019

Early in AEW’s run as a company, one of the lasting images was Shawn Spears hitting Cody with a steel chair at Fyter Fest, leaving him a bloody mess.

Back at the first Fyter Fest, Spears hit Cody with an unprotected chair shot, which gashed Cody on the back of his head, leading him to get 12 stitches. Speaking about that chair shot on a recent episode of AEW Unrestricted, Spears revealed Cody told him to “swing for the fences.”

“That guy is never going to half-ass anything. If you put him on top of a steel cage, he’s going to moonsault off. If he’s going to get hit with a chair, I say to him to put a hand up, he’s going to go, ‘No. Swing for the fences.’ As a performer, we have the same mentality. When he says he’s going to outperform you, he means it. What he may not understand is that I’m that guy too. I can’t also half-ass anything, so if I swing, I’m going for the fences,” Spears said.

Spears had no problem obliging with Cody’s request and said the two of them are similar in the sense that they will try and do everything at 100 percent and not half-ass it. After the chair shot, Spears and Cody did end up having a match at All Out in 2019, which Cody won.

“I think I can say this with confidence, and he’ll agree, if anything, iit added to the story heading to All Out. Everytime he rubs the one side of his head, he’s going to remember me. We’re kind of the same guy when it comes to performance and in terms of putting ourselves out there and not half-assing things,” Spears said.
