Skye Blue speaks about how a phone call from Adam Copeland, aka Cope, helped her prepare for her surgery, which helped her discover a love of reading, which is now helping her discover new ways of developing her wrestling persona.
Skye Blue has been out of action since sustaining an injury during her match against Hikaru Shida on the July 20, 2024 episode of AEW Collision. She required surgery to repair a broken ankle but made an appearance at AEW All Out 2024 in Chicago while on crutches.
Now she's slated to return to Chicago for her first match as part of an AEW Women's World Title Eliminator 4-Way during the AEW Dynamite: Beach Break event on May 14.
Speaking to Fightful's Iridian Fierro for Chicago's WGN Radio, Skye Blue revealed that Cope called her to help her mentally prepare for surgery since he had sustained a similar injury in his career. He revealed that one of the things that helped him during his recovery process was reading. Blue was apprehensive at first, believing that she wouldn't be able to have the attention span to read while also struggling with the drawbacks of her injury and recovering from surgery.
However, there's now a room in her house dedicated to books, and she says that she's found so much inspiration from the stories she's read for her own character development.
"This might sound a little nerdy. But [right before my surgery], Adam Copeland would call and check in about my ankle, and explain the process. l'd never been through a surgery, and he had practically done the same thing. One of the days that we had talked, he was like, 'I really got into reading because you have to sit still. You can't really do much.' I was like, 'Oh, I can't read. I can't sit still long enough, now you want me to stare at a book while I'm sitting?'
"I've gotten so much inspiration just from fantasy books and different characters, and how authors build characters. You can literally build yourself to be what you're passionate about and what you love. So I've taken a lot of inspiration from book characters and even with my hair or tattoos, it's what makes me feel confident, makes me feel like myself, and I think that's what matters the most."
