Sonya Deville: As Much As I Want A Title, I Take Pride In Being Relevant Without One

Sonya Deville wants to win the gold, but she takes pride in being relevant without holding a title.

Deville has established her role in WWE in recent years. In 2022, she returned to the ring after a noteworthy run as an authority figure. Though Deville rarely wins, she has continued to receive title shots on a fairly regular basis. Despite having multiple opportunities to win the gold, she has come up empty up to this point.

Speaking with Maria Menounos, Deville commented on the fact that she hasn't won a title in WWE yet. She made it clear that capturing some gold is on her agenda, but she also takes pride in staying booked, busy, and relevant without being a champion.

“As much as I want a championship, and that’s something that I will do before I am done here, I take pride in the fact that I stay booked and busy and relevant and trending without a championship, which I think there’s something to say about that, too," Deville said.

Deville went on to describe how she talks to The Miz about the similarities between their characters and their careers. She noted that her character doesn't win, but she doesn't have to, as she can talk her way out of it. Deville also pointed out that, given where she is without a title, one can only imagine how successful she would be if she had one, and the sky is the limit.

"Me and Mike [The Miz] talk a lot about the similarities in our characters and our careers. If you have a character that’s strong enough to stand on its own two feet without even, my character doesn’t even win, but she doesn’t need to because she can talk her way around it or talk her way out of it. So I take pride in that as a performer. Of course you want it. It’s gonna come. The way I look at it right now, I’m like, look at me without all of that for eight years. Imagine if you did put it on me. That’s how I look at it. The sky’s the limit, and I know that I’m capable…," Deville said.

The former authority figure went on to explain that she would rather be underrated than overrated, as it motivates her to keep pushing and proving her doubters wrong. She recalled how she used to be called "The Comeback Kid" during her MMA days, as she would start slow and ultimately prevail, and the WWE star stated that this pattern applied to her life in general.

"I’ve always said I’d rather be underrated than overrated, and I say that only because the fire that’s lit under my ass knowing that people may still doubt me or haven’t seen my full potential is what makes me…I’ve just chipped away. I’d rather be the little engine that could. In MMA, they used to call me the comeback kid because I would always have a little bit of a slow start in tournaments and in fights, and then I would prevail in the end, someway, somehow. I think that translates to my life in general, I might be a slow start, I take be a longer path or a different path, but I think in the end, I’ll always prevail, and that’s the confidence I have with my life and in the universe," Deville said.

Deville recently opened up about her experience as the survivor of an attempted kidnapping. Click here to see what she had to say.

A former WWE writer previously recalled a plan for Mandy Rose to win the gold and kiss Sonya Deville at WrestleMania 35. More information is available here.
