Stone Cold Steve Austin comments on John Cena’s heel turn, expressing that he believes Cena should have remained babyface.
At WWE Elimination Chamber 2025, after winning the number one contenders Chamber match for the WWE Championship, John Cena would turn heel, attacking Cody Rhodes brutally alongside Travis Scott and The Rock. This would kick off a heel run that lasted till the week before SummerSlam, taking up a large chunk of Cena’s retirement tour.
While speaking to Insight With Chris Van Vliet in a new interview, Stone Cold Steve Austin addressed Cena’s heel turn, expressing his belief that Cena should have remained a babyface.
“Everybody- not everybody- a lot of people wanted to see at least one John Cena heel turn in his run. It was okay. It was okay, you know. I like him better as a babyface. I wanted to see him as a heel at some point during his career, the way that it was done, and I’m not knocking booking. I’m just like, man, this far in, forget about it. Just let him do his thing. Fucking kids love that guy.”
Elsewhere in the same interview, Austin spoke about how current wrestlers could sell more. You can read more about that here.
