Amidst arguably the strongest levels of competition since the founding of the AEW Women's Division is none other than the longest reigning and defending AEW Women's Champion Hikaru Shida. And staring her down is the biggest heel in the division and one of the first women officially signed at the very beginning, none other than Dr. Britt Baker, DMD. Once the strategic move was made to turn Baker heel, it was only a matter of time before she'd be on a hellbent collision course headed straight for championship gold and subsequently to Hikaru Shida. As Shida found out rather quickly, when you hold the only championship belt in the division, all eyes set their sights on you, no matter friend or foe.
Since successfully defeating the second AEW Women's Champion, Nyla Rose at Double or Nothing on May 23, 2020, not even a pandemic could keep her down. After that there was nowhere to go but up for Shida! It wouldn't be long before she flew through the stiff competition that's been growing at an exponential rate in AEW. Former AEW Champion Nyla Rose, NWA Women's Champion Serena Deeb, Tay Conti, Anna Jay, Penelope Ford, former NWA Women's Champion Thunder Rosa, Abadon, Big Swole, and more. The list goes on. Even Britt Baker went for Shida and fell short and was left bereft. No title to speak of. A pointed memory that doesn't sit well with the doctor. Although, one could argue that the Britt Baker Hikaru Shida last faced prior to Baker's own ascent, is not the same Britt Baker gearing up to take Shida down at Double or Nothing…
Both women being neither friends nor strangers will walk into Sunday both wanting the same thing - but there can only be one winner in this championship bout. Baker as I've previously mentioned in prior Fightful.com articles is not a character to mince words, nor will she issue any apologies. She's immersed herself in violent delights to which we all know have violent ends. And if Double or Nothing goes the way of St. Patrick's Day Slam's Light's Out match against Thunder Rosa, well, then Hikaru Shida will in for the fight of her career and blood, sweat, tears, and violence are imminent. Hikaru Shida will walk into Double or Nothing to put her pinnacle seat as AEW Women's Champion on the line against Dr. Britt Baker, DMD. Shida has yet to back down to any challenge. There's been no obstacle that Shida has skirted. On the other hand Baker is not above any means necessary to gain her ultimate goal in the end. A classic baby face veteran competitor versus the up and coming gritty, malicious, dastardly, vindictive, violent heel. Britt Baker has already proven just how far she'll go to be at the top of the division. Will Hikaru Shida be willing to bleed for that very same division?
Which woman will bet against the house at Double or Nothing? Black or red? Which woman will be feeling lucky when that bell rings? Both women will be representing the depth and caliber of the AEW Women's Division as one aims to see her legacy continue while the other aims to end that legacy and cement her own in the AEW history books. AEW's Double or Nothing PPV live this Sunday will mark the 372nd day of Hikaru Shida's impeccable reign as the longest AEW Champion. Will she leave Double or Nothing with her reign intact to see day number 373? Or, will Dr. Britt Baker, DMD., be the first woman to do what all others failed to do for over one year, dethrone Hikaru Shida? All bets are in this Sunday as these two incredible athletes class for coveted AEW gold! Double or Nothing - who do you got? Share your thoughts with us here at Fightful!
