This past episode of WWE's Monday Night Raw kicked off the official journey to the 2021 Royal Rumble and the road to Wrestlemania. Immediately following the insane WWE PPV TLC, was the excitedly anticipated return of Alexa Bliss. Her come back to T.V. came after The Fiend went toe to toe against Randy Orton in an Inferno Match. As voted by WWE Fans on Twitter, the result of that Inferno Match was the single most shocking moment of the TLC PPV. The Fiend found himself too close to the ever flickering flame of Orton's tenacity, effectively finding himself burned.
Normally, The WWE is able to get away with more edgier moments that include violence on their PPVs. TLC did just that with no exception. The WWE would not be able to get Inferno Matches, blood, harsh language, and more on their T.V. programming due to PG sponsorship deals. Recently, there was a request for more mature content, to boost ratings and viewership. In my opinion, WWE delivered with an immensely impactful punch immediately following TLC on Monday Night Raw. Alexa Bliss' reemergence with Alexa's Playground was excellent opportunity executed impeccably by Bliss and the WWE.
Alexa's return puzzling Randy Orton gave fans a somewhat pensive and more cautious side to The Viper. A side they aren't used to seeing. The set up for Alexa's Playground was epic in its horror-esq vibe. The entire segment had me feeling a very Freddy Krueger like atmosphere that fit very well into WWE's transition to more mature aspects in their content while still appealing to kids. Almost like Goosebumps meets Freddy Krueger.
Fans were all over social media raving about Alexa's return and their overall appreciation for her segment. Alexa's acting skills added to the dynamic of this intriguing feature on Raw. Her explanations and open-ended puns to Orton added a cinematic depth previously missing from Raw prior to the pandemic. The segment broke up the matches perfectly while adding continuity within the evolving story that appealed to several demographics without bring insulting to fans.
I along with many others will be looking forward to what WWE plans to do with Alexa's Playground and hope that they utilize its potential with out oversaturation. The execution was brilliant. Simply splendid! And in my opinion, quite reminiscent of Paul Heyman's writing of Liv Morgan prior to the Lana/Lashley wedding storyline. Alexa in this role is something I'd have a blast writing for with creepy vignettes, added mystique, unique atmosphere, and a sense of building suspense. A complete departure from her prior character while still keeping those elements to tease with. Tremendous job by Alexa Bliss.
