Ted DiBiase Wasn’t Jealous When Bret Hart Won WWE Title, Admits He Could Have Politicked More For Spot

Ted DiBiase discusses Bret Hart capturing the WWE Championship in 1992.

When Ted DiBiase entered WWE in 1987, he was immediately pushed into the WWE Championship scene. At that time, Bret Hart was in the midst of his first run with the WWE Tag Team Championships as part of the Hart Foundation. By 1992, the roles had reversed: Ted was part of a successful tag team holding the Tag Team Championships, while Bret was defeating Ric Flair to win the WWE Championship.

Ted had never officially held the WWE Championship. He was awarded the belt by Andre the Giant in 1988 and defended the title at WWE Live Events, but his title reign was later removed from the record.

Speaking on the latest episode of his Everybody’s Got A Pod podcast, DiBiase was asked about any potential feelings of jealousy when Bret Hart captured the title in 1992. He admits that he always thought fondly of Bret and was never jealous. However, he is, of course, disappointed that he never got that spot. Furthermore, he believes he could have politicked more for that position on the card.

“I thought it was great. Number one, I think the world of Bret Hart. There are so many similarities. He, like me, came from a wrestling family. His dad was a promoter up there in Calgary for all those years. So he grew up in the business like I did, and he had it.

“I was not jealous of him, because I admired his work. Here’s a guy who is definitely capable. There’s no doubt that Bret Hart had the wrestling Talent. Was he deserving? Absolutely. Was I disappointed because I wasn’t selected? Absolutely. The other thing is, maybe I should have played politics a little more. Maybe I should have spoken up… There was a time when you could [threaten to leave] and go to another territory. Now, if you say, ‘I’m leaving,’ Well, there’s the door. Don’t let the door hit you on the butt. There was no place else to go. The entire United States was Vince’s territory.”

Elsewhere on the podcast, Ted DiBiase explained why he started using the Million Dollar Dream. Read more here.
