Tetsuya Naito Wants To Be IWGP Heavyweight And Intercontinental Champion At The Same Time

Tetsuya Naito is aiming to become a double champion.

It was at New Japan Pro Wrestling's Wrestle Kingdom 13 on January 4th of this year that Tetsuya Naito defeated Chris Jericho to end Jericho's eight-month reign as IWGP Intercontinental Champion and in doing so Naito won his third IWGP Intercontinental Title. It is no secret that Naito is not fond of any title other than the Heavyweight belt because he feels that the mid-card titles take up space and are unnecessary.

The tranquilo one chatted with Tokyo Sports after successfully defending the I.C. Title against Taichi at 'The New Beginning' in Sapporo and stated that he wants to enter the New Japan Cup while he is I.C. Champion so he can win the tournament and challenge for the Heavyweight Title in hopes of becoming a double champion.

"I want to target the Heavyweight Championship while holding this I.C. Championship." Naito added that he will not be able to drop the title because the Intercontinental Title picture is picking up but he wants to to overtake a throne that is currently seating an active champion in New Japan.
