The Godfather reflects on how his professional wrestling career began and how he wasn’t a wrestling fan beforehand.

The WWE Hall of Famer would begin his pro wrestling career in 1989 before later signing with WWE and debuting the Papa Shango and Godfather characters during the 90s.

While speaking to Adventure Access in a new interview, The Godfather was asked about how he got into the wrestling industry.

“Money. I mean, I’m being honest. I wasn’t a wrestling fan. I grew up in the Bay Area in the 70s, and in the 70s, roller derby was way bigger than wrestling, so I grew up on roller derby. Basically, I was working in Vegas, and they were filming a movie, a Sylvester Stallone movie called Over the Top. It was an arm wrestling picture, and there was a lot of wrestlers in there, and I was a big dude, and they’re like, ‘you should become a wrestler’, and I made some calls, and here I am. Seriously, that’s how it worked.”

Elsewhere in another recent interview, the Hall of Famer would discussed running into Vince McMahon before smoking weed with Snoop Dogg. You can read more about that here.
