The Sandman discusses his feeling that Paul Heyman was the first US promoter to use Mexican talent.
In the mid 1990s, ECW would introduce US fans to Lucha Libre, with several top names such as Rey Mysterio, Eddie Guerrero and more competing for the promotion before featuring in the likes of WCW and WWE later on in their careers. ECW would be the first US based promotion to heavily use Mexican talent, and now Paul Heyman has been credited for it.
While speaking to Monopoly Events in a new interview, The Sandman noted that Mexican talent wasn’t getting used at all until Heyman bought them into ECW.
“He made so many stars that came out of that company, if you really think about it. The Mexican guys were not getting used in America at all until Paul Heyman brought those guys in. Next thing you know, Rey’s going to WWE. Konnan’s going to WCW. Paul E brought those guys in that weren’t being used in America at all. He made them like everyday freaking names in the business now.”
Heyman was recently written off WWE television, you can read more about that here.
