Tom Hannifan reflects on making himself appear shorter while doing interviews in WWE.
During his time with WWE, Hannifan would work as a backstage interviewer as well as an announcer. Hannifan is also very tall for a broadcaster, something that Vince McMahon took note of early on in his time with the company.
While speaking to The Wrestling Classic, Tom Hannifan was asked about the viral photos of him making himself shorter for backstage interviews, with Tom explaining how it came about and how it became something he did to screw with people.
“There was an interview I did with Roman Reigns and Roman, if I remember correctly, he lost his place in his promo. As a result, the cameraman, the writer, the lighting guy, the audio guy, myself, everybody got called into Gorilla at one point or another to talk to Vince, and Vince was like, ‘you look tall’, and I’m like, all right, well, I’m like, ‘I’m six foot, dude.’ Like you hired me. Like, this is how it is, and he was like, ‘when I was interviewing Andre the Giant, you know, we put him on an Apple box and I stood in a hole or I took my shoes off or something like that.’ So he was like, ‘you know what you do? You cut the soles off your shoes.’ I’m like, what? So I was like, I’m not doing that to my shoes. I was like, I’ll crouch or I’ll do a split, and I was like, I’m taller than half the roster. So after a while, like once the internet caught on, now I’m like, ‘oh, I’m just going to start screwing with you.’ The camera guys were just the best because they took care of me on so many instances, and every once in a while, like there’s the picture with Dolph and Ryback where I’m like, yep, there it is. But like Jericho was great about it. Kevin Owens was great about it. Roman was also fantastic about it. Wade Barrett. I did it so intentionally because he’s like six, seven. I made myself the same height for him as I did as Neville. I just did it to screw with people after a while. You just try not to get fired at first, and then after a while, you’re like, you know what, we’re just gonna have fun.”
Elsewhere in another interview, Hannifan noted that Deonna Purrazzo and Steve Maclin opened the door for him to join TNA. You can read more about that here.
