Tony Khan Says He Apologized To Hikaru Shida After Hearing Willie Urbina Mock Her Accent

Tony Khan was not happy with his Spanish Commentary team's actions on the latest AEW Dynamite.

On March 28th, Willie Urbina was caught on the hot mic of the Fite TV broadcast making fun of Asian accents as AEW celebrated Hikaru Shida's one-year reign as Women's Champion.

Alex Abrahantes asked Willie Urbina to do translation for Shida’s promo, leading to him doing an impression of Shida and making fun of Asian accents. Dasha Kuret and Thunder Rosa were also on commentary for the incident.

The next day, Dave Meltzer reported that Urbina had been let go by the promotion.

During his post-Double or Nothing media scrum, Tony Khan commented on the decision and his reaction to hearing what happened. Here is what he said:

“I didn’t think there was any excuse. I was not happy. Afterwards, I heard what was said and having our commentators involved with what was said about her, who I also apologized to, I thought it was best for the company to make this decision.”

Shida competed at Double or Nothing, losing her newly gold-plated and diamond-encrusted title to Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D.
