Tony Khan Says He Had Exploding Barbed Wire Deathmatch Idea A Year Ago

At AEW Revolution, Jon Moxley and Kenny Omega will compete in an exploding barbed wire deathmatch for the AEW Championship.

The match is famous in Japan but is a rare sight in America, especially for a national television company like AEW. But Tony Khan has had the idea for the match in his back pocket for quite some time.

"I came up with it when I was talking to Kenny about matches in Japan, great matches we could do. It came up a long time ago, probably a year ago. I had it in the back of my mind as something we could do. The timing was right now and it's a great main event. It's something we can do live. It's an exploding barbed wire deathmatch. People expect a savage match and that's what they're going to get. It's going to be one of the craziest matches ever on pay-per-view. I paid a big fine for what they did in Baltimore and I think this will be crazier and better," Khan said in an interview with PWInsider.

AEW was fined $10,000 for Lights Out match between Moxley and Omega at Full Gear 2019 as Maryland "prohibits wrestlers from deliberately lacerating themselves or their opponents, or introducing human or animal blood into the match."

Khan also defended the match from those who say it strays from AEW's "sports style presentation," by saying it's a competition and won't be hokey, which makes it a sports presentation.
