Tony Khan Says Women Main Eventing An AEW PPV Would Have To Be ‘Right Match, Right Situation, Right Time’

The women’s division in AEW has grown exponentially since 2019, with women main eventing shows, titles being added, and women competing in the same high profile matches, such as Blood & Guts, as the men.
One thing the women haven’t done is main event an AEW pay-per-view.
Speaking to Jon Alba of Sports Illustrated, Tony Khan was asked what it would take for women to main event a PPV.
“It’s very potentially possible. It has to be the right match, the right situation, at the right time. If there were ever two that could do it, it would be the two you mentioned,” Khan said of Mercedes Moné and Toni Storm, specifically. “But there’s a bunch of other candidates for it as well. It was a fantastic match. They had it All In: Texas. That was a main-event-caliber match. It really felt that way. It was presented as one of the main matches on the card.”
Mercedes Mone vs. Toni Storm at AEW All In Texas was billed as the biggest women’s match in AEW history, but the AEW World Title Texas Deathmatch between Hangman Page and Jon Moxley headlined the show.
Khan was asked about Hangman vs. Kyle Fletcher headlining AEW All Out over Storm vs. Kris Statlander, and he said, “Well, it just depends on the situation, the rivalry at the right time. I think it’s a great point, a great question. For what the matches are, and in that case, I thought for what they were going to do, going 38 minutes, tearing the house down on that particular night, I thought ‘Hangman’ and Kyle was a great choice. Knowing what they had planned, and a lot of times that comes down to it. I think it’s absolutely something we can see, and I would expect to see, in the future, on the night where it makes the most sense, and it’s the biggest and most anticipated match on that card.”
The women were spotlighted at AEW Worlds End with Statlander defending the AEW Women’s Title against Jamie Hayter, Babes of Wrath (Harley Cameron & Willow Nightingale) defending the AEW Women’s Tag Team Titles against Mone & Athena, and Storm and Marina Shafir competing in a Mixed Nuts Mayhem match alongside the Death Riders and Conglomeration.
