Tony Schiavone Explains How AEW Staff Found Out About Brodie Lee's Condition And Passing

The wrestling world tragically lost Jon Huber (Brodie Lee in AEW) on December 26.

Lee passed away after a non-COVID lung illness. He had been off AEW television since October with his absence not explained. On October 26, Brodie appeared on the AEW Unrestricted podcast and explained that had not wrestled in weeks and could not finish a recent Peloton workout.

On What Happened When, Tony Schiavone explained what happened after the podcast was recorded and how AEW staff found out about Brodie's passing.

"Unfortunately, the AEW Unrestricted podcast that we do, the one we did with Brodie, we did it the day before he got sick. We heard he had been airlifted to the Mayo Clinic. Amanda, his wife, met with the entire group and told us how bad of shape he was in and to please not say anything to anybody. Everybody did a great job of keeping it close to the vest. We all knew that it didn't look good, but we were hoping that he would 'kick out.' The day he passed away, we received an email that we were going to have a company-wide Zoom call in 30 minutes. I knew if we were having a Zoom call that quick, something was bad. They told us [he passed]," he said.

Fightful reported that the AEW roster respected the wishes of the Huber family and kept details of his illness private. You can view the report by clicking here.

Elsewhere during the podcast, Schiavone revealed AEW has signed eight-year-old Brodie Jr. to a contract and he will be part of the roster when he is of age. You can find his comments on how AEW is taking care of Brodie Jr. by clicking here
