Triple H sets the record straight.
It was announced tonight that NXT UK TakeOver: Cardiff will take place on Aug. 31 and air live on WWE Network at 3 p.m. ET. August 31 is shaping up to be a big day for wrestling fans as NJPW will hold their Royal Quest event at 5 a.m. ET and AEW All Out will take place at 8 p.m. ET.
Contrary to popular belief, WWE/NXT did not book the date in order to compete against NJPW or AEW.
"Contrary to the buzz, the date of August 31 is a date we've had for a long time," said Triple H in a post-TakeOver media call. "That building has been booked with us long before WrestleMania. We just hadn't announced because it wasn't the right time. We didn't want to announce something for the brand six months out. Tonight was the right night to do it. It has nothing to do with anybody else, and we will take place in primetime in the UK and be on in the afternoon in the US."
Triple H also stated that the NXT UK brand would be looking to make a statement on Aug. 31 and believes there is a healthy competition between NXT UK and NXT. When talking about the "rivalry" between the two brands, Triple H said, "[NXT UK talent] will walk out of the building in Cardiff, look across the pond, and say 'follow that.'"
