Undertaker Talks Vince McMahon’s Vision Behind His Gimmick, Understanding It Was Special
The Undertaker reflects on Vince McMahon giving him his iconic gimmick.
The Undertaker has been a WWE mainstay for 35 years. Debuting at the 1990 WWE Survivor Series, he transformed the landscape of WWE and became a fixture across every era that followed. However, he wasn’t always known as The Undertaker. Before joining WWE, he performed under aliases such as “Mean Mark” and “The Punisher.”
During a recent interview on Nightcap, Undertaker was asked if he created the gimmick himself. Of course, he did not; Vince McMahon created the character. Still, he recognized the potential that the character held.
“That name was given to me by Vince. He had envisioned in his mind this character. Basically, he needed a big guy with very limited personality. It was something that resonated with me. Everything was on these big storyboards, and I’m in his office, and he’s showing me this, and immediately my brain is like — I knew. I didn’t know what it was going to become, but I knew it was different, and I knew it was special. I was like, ‘This is pretty cool.’
Vince McMahon has called The Undertaker his favorite WWE Superstar in the past. He was also the one who inducted The Undertaker into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2022.
Vince McMahon currently has no ties to WWE after stepping down from WWE and TKO following a sexual misconduct lawsuit. Undertaker, however, is becoming more involved with creating the stars of tomorrow.
