Will Ospreay Hopes His AEW World Title Reign Puts Him In Sports Based Stories And Matches

Will Ospreay hopes his AEW World Title reign will put him in more sports based stories and matches as it continues on.

At AEW All In at the end of August, Ospreay would capture the AEW World Championship, dethroning Kenny Omega. Since then, he has defended the title on pay-per-view against Jon Moxley. While that was a significant story for Ospreay in terms of long term storytelling, the AEW World Champion would like more sports based matches going forward.

In an interview with The Extreme Channel prior to AEW All In, Will Ospreay was asked what kind of reign he would like to have, noting that he would like it to be a reign with sorts based stories and matches.

“I like to look at like, big boxing main events, like the Conor Benn one that just happened was like a huge thing, and I feel like my whole thing with wrestling is I like to put the sports presentation behind it. I feel like there’s matches, like brand new concept matches that we could really bring to AEW that I’ve kind of thought about, and there’s something that’s just, it’s never been done before, it’s just something that I’d love to tease, and I’d love to bring back a little bit more of a sports atmosphere. The World Cup was super inspiring to me. Watching everybody come together and I love the drama of seeing people coming from behind as well. They’re kind of like my points that I would like to put on a title reign if I was ever lucky enough to win tomorrow. For me, it’s just kind of like, what can I do that’s different to all the guys that we’ve mentioned? Honestly, I feel like I’m one of the best sports-based wrestlers in the game today. So put me in sports-based stories and matches.”

Ospreay is currently set to defend his title at AEW Grand Slam: France, before defending the title in a Clockwork Carnage match at AEW WrestleDream. You can read more about that here.
