Will Ospreay believes he's the best choice to win the brand new IWGP Global Championship at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 18.
Following the destruction of the IWGP United States Championship and the IWGP United Kingdom Championship at the hands of David Finlay, a brand new title has been created and will be put up for grabs in a match between Finlay, Jon Moxley, and Will Ospreay. New Japan Pro Wrestling recently announced that that title would be called the IWGP Global Championship.
In a new interview with Sports Illustrated, Ospreay explains why he thinks he is best suited to set the pace for defending the championship around the globe, especially as he prepares to become a full-time AEW-contracted pro wrestler.
“It is going to be defended around the globe, and there is no one better served to do that,” said Ospreay. “I’m performing at the highest level around the world.
“This is my chance to cross-promote. That’s truly a special thing to have. I want to elevate the promotions I work with and my opponents in the ring. I am going to deliver the best possible matches I can deliver.”
Furthermore, Ospreay believes he has a leg up on the competition because, despite his issues with both men, they are focused on violence and he is strictly focused on winning.
“I want to walk out of New Japan defeating Finlay, but there is Moxley, too,” said Ospreay. “Moxley needs to understand something. We had one match, and that was in Chicago, and it was a botch by the referee, who f----- up on the three-count. Moxley can say whatever he wants, but that’s not going to happen in Japan.
“At Wrestle Kingdom, I am going to be in my element. They’re going to focus on violence, I’m going to focus on winning.”
