William Regal Calls Damien Sandow 'The One That Got Away', Says He's Better Than His Career Ended Up

William Regal has high praise for the former Damien Sandow.

In the world of professional wrestling, not everyone can be a main event-level Superstar. There are many examples of bona fide legends of the industry that never made it to the top of the card or held World Championship gold. In the minds of some wrestling fans, William Regal is at the top of that list, and therefore, when Regal proclaims that someone's ability far exceeds what their overall career trajectory was, there's a little more weight behind the statement.

On the most recent episode of his Gentleman Villain podcast, William Regal described Damien Sandow as one-such Superstar. Regal said that while Damien Sandow is never guaranteed to be at the top of the car, he found him to be “magic.” He also compared Sandow’s ability to that of his own.

"I do believe Damien Sandow was — he was far better than his career ended up being," said Regal. "Damien Sandow was absolutely magic and special in everything he was given. If anything, that's why I liked him so much, he was like me. Is he going to be the top guy like Seth Rollins, Jon Moxley, and Roman Reigns? Maybe not. Is he going to be a perfect player on your show, do anything, and make anything work? Yes."

Continuing on, William Regal says that he truly believed that Damien Sandow would have a job in wrestling, at a high level, "forever" due to his ability to adapt in any scenario.

"I don't like to say certain things but that was — I always thought that he would have a job in wrestling, at a high level, forever. When I say 'high level,' I mean in a top company, because he could do anything and blend in with anybody.

"He can pull off good comedy, and I like to consider myself one of those. he was just brilliant at it," Regal continued. "The others have gone on to do well. The guys you mentioned became The Shield and look what's happened to them. They were all great and I think the world of all of them. They were all great to be around at that point in time. In FCW, there were always polite, respectful, asked the right questions, and did the right things. Damien Sandow was just the one that got away."

Damien Sandow did win WWE Money in the Bank in 2013 but lost his championship opportunity against John Cena in October of that year. After his career in WWE came to a close, Aron Stevens, the man playing Damien Sandow, would go on to have a brief run in Impact Wrestling before resurfacing in the NWA where he still is active today. Over the course of his career he has hung up the boots on more than one occasion but whenever he is active in wrestling, he continues to perform to the best of his abilities.

As for William Regal, he is currently in All Elite Wrestling working with names like Claudio Castagnoli, Bryan Danielson, Jon Moxley, and others, as he continues to pay it forward in the wrestling industry for as long as he can.
