WWE announces a week-long on social media in honor of 60 years of the WWE Championship being the symbol of excellence in sports entertainment.
First won by Buddy Rogers on April 25, 1963, numerous Hall of Famers have held the WWE Championship over the years. While the design of the championship belt has changed several times throughout history, for 60 years, the WWE Championship has represented the pinnacle of the industry.
Currently held by Roman Reigns and unified with the WWE Universal Championship, WWE has announced that it will be celebrating the history of its top prize for an entire week on social media to mark this historic occasion.
This week marks the 60-year anniversary of sports-entertainment’s most prestigious title, the WWE Championship.
Now in the possession of Undisputed WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns, the WWE Title was first won by “Nature Boy” Buddy Rogers on April 25, 1963.
In the decades following Rogers’ seminal feat, as WWE grew from a regional operation to the global phenomenon that it is today, the WWE Championship remained a constant. It has stood alone as the ultimate prize to all Superstars, a coveted distinction reserved for only the best of the best, with luminaries such as John Cena, “Stone Cold” Steve Austin and Bruno Sammartino counted among its titleholders.
In recognition of the title’s 60-year milestone, today WWE is kicking off WWE Championship Week, a weeklong celebration on social media.

Roman Reigns last defended the WWE Championship against Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 39. He is marching towards 400 days holding the WWE Championship while he inches ever closer to 1,000 days as WWE Universal Champion.
Currently, Roman Reigns is slated to hit 400 days with the WWE Championship on Monday, May 8, and 1,000 days with the Universal Title on Saturday, May 27, the same day that WWE heads to Saudi Arabia for WWE Night of Champions. Learn more about that event here.
