WWE confirmed the draft during a commercial break on the September 13 episode of Monday Night Raw.

The last WWE Draft happened on October 9 and October 12, 2020, with the rosters being fully reset, meaning all superstars were eligible to switch brands with the format akin to a traditional draft. WWE has also done a Superstar Shake-Up in the past, which sees a handful of wrestlers "randomly" moving brands. Also, WWE has done a draft lottery. The last of those took place in 2011.

The format for the 2021 Draft is likely going to be a traditional draft format as the commercial played an audio clip of Stephanie announcing "the first pick." It is unknown if NXT will be part of the draft.
