WWE Issues Statement On Controversial Jinder Mahal Promo

The controversial Jinder Mahal promo from Tuesday Night's episode of Smackdown Live has garnered a response from WWE.

A racially inspired rant from WWE Champion Jinder Mahal on Smackdown saw him make several Asian-stereotype jokes in regards to his WWE Hell in a Cell opponent Shinsuke Nakamura. Despite Fightful.com's effort to gain a comment, one wasn't issued on through Wednesday.

They did, however, submit a statement to Washington Post, saying "Just like many other TV shows or movies, WWE creates programming with fictional personalities that cover real world issues and sensitive subjects. As a producer of such TV shows, WWE Corporate is committed to embracing and celebrating individuals from all backgrounds as demonstrated by the diversity of our employees, performers and fans worldwide."

Despite this response, Fightful.com was told Wednesday morning that several personalities backstage knew that the promo was in poor taste, and that Vince McMahon has been more open to pushing the envelope of late in an effort to increase attendance at live events.

WWE recognized the offensive nature of the promo, as they didn't upload it to their Youtube. You can check out Brandon Howard's feature on the interview segment at this link.
