Max Star Talks About Winning Polvora's Mask, Viajeros del Espacio, More | INTERVIEW
The young Mexican high-flyer, Max Star, was one of the big winners from one of CMLL’s seminal events, Homenaje a Dos Leyendas. This was due to him managing to outlast veteran Polvora in an 8-Man Lucha de Apuestas, taking his mask in the process. Following this landmark win, he spoke with Fightful about his win, his career, and more. The full interview can be viewed in Spanish at the link above.
Beating Polvora at Homenaje a Dos Leyendas 2026.
Starting off, we asked Max Star about his big win after pinning Polvora in the Lucha de Apuestas Match at Homenaje a Dos Leyendas. Star reflected on his victory over Polvora and what it would mean for his career to have his mask on the resume.
“It’s a very important achievement in my career—the second most important in Max Star’s career in that 8-Man Match with mask & hair on-the-line stipulation. I went in with the mindset of coming out victorious, but it was a very difficult, very tough fight. I think my heart and my hunger for victory carried me through more than anything else. Honestly, I was very tired, very hurt, but thanks to God and the crowd, which filled me with energy, I came out victorious, my hand raised high.”
“It was kind of tough because the strategy was to stick together at that moment. It was my first apuestas match. The first time I defended my identity and my pride, it was hard. I think my nerves got the better of me at some point. For example, Hombre Bala (Jr.) was about to pin Cancerbero, but I stepped in and told him to wait for me. At that moment, I reacted impulsively. I wanted to beat him with a Magistral, and he told me to let him go. It was a difficult moment, a tense moment, but we’re good as Los Viajeros del Espacio. He has more experience. Maybe he didn’t want to risk his identity, and that was the moment when he had to save his mask, and that’s what he did. It’s part of it, after all. It wasn’t a tag team match; it was each of us individually.”
Viajeros del Espacio.
And speaking of his alliance with Hombre Bala Jr., they have both been part of the faction Los Viajeros del Espacio. Other faction mates include Valiente Jr., Futuro, and former faction-mate Neon. He also spoke about his time in the faction and how they have all grown together.
“It’s really wonderful. I think everyone has had their moment, their chance. Take Neon, for example. He’s already a star, an established wrestler. He may still have a long way to go and a lot to learn—just like us, he’s very young—but he’s made the most of every opportunity. He’s already won the Reyes del Aire, the Leyenda de Plata trophy, he’s already competed in AEW and Ring of Honor, and he had the chance to become the CMLL World Trios Champion. It was a wonderful time when he was with us; it wasn’t officially a faction at that point, but it was one of the groups that started with us. He and Futuro came up with the idea, and then they included me, and I’m grateful to them. Los Viajeros del Espacio are a real deal now.”
Star, Neon & Futuro’s days in CMLL predate Viajeros del Espacio, as they were part of the Virus’s class in the 2023 Torneo de Escuelas. Star reflected on how all three have grown since the Torneo. He also credited Tony Salazar & Volador Jr. in growing throughout his career.
“Having good coaches is a very important part of a wrestler’s career, and as we’ve seen, Virus is one of the strongest coaches in the CMLL—without taking anything away from anyone else. I think we’ve also had good coaches ourselves; in my case, and that of the three of us and Neon, we trained with Arturo Beristain and Tony Salazar, who, for me, in my career, was the one who pushed me the most, taught me the most, and from whom I learned the most because I spent seven years with him training at the CMLL school. I was there from the age of 14; I arrived with him, and he was the one who forged me into a true professional wrestler. From there, we trained with Volador Jr., who also instilled a great deal of respect in us. He has helped each and every one of us to have that hunger and that drive and, above all, not to back down from anyone. Not to shrink back, but rather, on the contrary, to seize opportunities and show why the CMLL counts on us for everything. These kinds of events give us the chance to wrestle against established wrestlers. We, in our time—as was the case with Futuro and me against Los Hermanos Chávez—have had the opportunity to be part of a Gran Alternativa and very important events.”
Teaming with Volador Jr. on Gran Alternativa 2024.
We also spoke with him regarding his time teaming with Volador Jr. on the 2024 edition of the CMLL Gran Alternativa Tournament. He told us it was a dream come true and was thankful he got to team up with one of his idols.
“It was a dream come true. It was one of my dreams when I first arrived here at the CMLL. I’d always imagined it because he’s my biggest idol. For me, he was one of my idols as a kid, and I used to watch him on Saturdays on Canal 9. For me, it’s was a dream come true. Just stepping into the ring with him, standing by his side, teaming up. I even remember that day, before we went out, I was feeling really nervous. I wanted to cry from nerves & excitement, and he hugged me and said: Let’s give it our all, let’s put on a good match, let’s leave it all out there. We made it to the semifinals in the end. We couldn’t advance past that round because Neon and Máscara Dorada were also on very good form, but I took away a wonderful experience that I never even thought I’d achieve at my young age. The truth is, at one point, I said to myself, “One day I’ll catch up to my idols,” and I’ve had the opportunity to wrestle with most of them.”
What’s next for him?
Regarding his next steps, Max Star told us some of his goals for the immediate future & long-term following his win against Polvora.
“I think it’s going to give my career a huge boost. It gives me valuable experience that will allow me to keep taking on big challenges and pursuing big dreams in the future. Going to Ring of Honor, maybe returning to NJPW for a Super Junior match—why not the Junior Tag League alongside Futuro? I think we complement each other very well, and we’re very interested in getting a shot at the World Tag Team Championships held by Los Hermanos Chávez. Also, in due time, we’d like to have the opportunity for Valiente Jr., Futuro, and Max Star to face the Sky Team in a match for the World Trios Championships. I think those are the challenges we’re hoping for and want, and, well, down the road, why not headline an anniversary event in a mask match someday? It would be, I think, something even bigger for my career. I try not to settle for anything; I try to keep the same hunger for victory. Just like when I first arrived to train here at the CMLL school. That’s it: keep training, preparing, and dreaming big.”
We’d like to thank Max Star for giving us some of his time after his big win to answer these questions! He will be in action alongside Valiente Jr. & Futuro against El Cobarde, Coyote & Polvora on the 3/27 CMLL Viernes Espectacular.
