At WrestleMania 24, Floyd Mayweather would step into the ring for a match with Wight, then wrestling in WWE under his Big Show ring name. Their feud would kick off at No Way Out earlier that year, with Mayweather breaking Wight’s nose in the process. However, the storyline was originally set to look very different before injuries caused changes.
While speaking to Gareth A Davies in a new interview, Paul Wight explained that originally, the plan was for him to team with Mayweather against Batista and Rey Mysterio before both men suffered injuries, leading to plans shifting to a singles match between Wight and Mayweather.
“That angle came about, just not meaning to cut you off, but originally that was supposed to be a tag. It was supposed to be Floyd Mayweather and I against Batista and Rey Mysterio, and in the events leading up before we launched that angle, Rey and Dave both got hurt. I think Dave tore a bicep or a lat and Rey did something. So then it was brought to me, ‘hey, would you consider working Floyd in a singles match?’ I’m like, ‘at WrestleMania?’ At the time, he’s the hottest boxer on the planet. Absolutely, 100%, I’m in, whatever we need to do.”
Elsewhere in the same interview, Wight explained why he never explored fighting in combat sports. You can read more about that here.
