JBL Defends Sami Zayn’s 9-Day WWE Championship Reign

JBL defends Sami Zayn’s WWE Title reign.

At Night of Champions, Sami Zayn won his first world championship in WWE. His reign only lasted 9 days, however, as CM Punk defeated him for the belt during the 7/6 WWE Raw.

Speaking on Something to Wrestle With, JBL shared his thoughts on Sami’s short title reign.

“Look, it did something great for Sami. Sami’s a world champion now. Now he’s ex-world champion. That’s something that’s very few people make it to be a world champion on that level. That’s something to be said. Tommy Rich, hottest baby face in the freaking world back in the ‘80s. He was NWA World Champion for seven days, and when he was announced, he was always the ex-NWA Champion.”

Later in the podcast, JBL explains why the title reign may have been huge for Sami.

“You may have given Sami some real life out of here that he wouldn’t have had without these nine days as champion. You may have done something huge for him here. People always say, ‘Oh, he just held it for nine days.’ Tommy originally held it for seven. He held it, that’s the big thing. Now he’s got this to bitch about it, and I think it’s awesome.”

Sami Zayn is currently scheduled to team up with Gunther against CM Punk and Cody Rhodes at Saturday Night’s Main Event. Click here for the full lineup.
