Cody Rhodes: It Didn’t Make Sense For John Cena To Turn Heel

John Cena shocked the wrestling world at WWE Elimination Chamber 2025, turning on Cody Rhodes and aligning himself with The Rock.

Cena spent the majority of his career as the clean cut babyface who preached hustle, loyalty, and respect, but in the end sold out to “The Final Boss.”

Speaking to Amy Poehler on Good Hang, Cody Rhodes was asked if there was excitement backstage before the big betrayal.

“With John, the moment he hugs me and his face changes, he was so excited. I was more trepidatious in terms of, he had never done that, and it didn’t even make sense to do it at this point. He had never gone rogue or gone bad. I just didn’t want to screw that massive moment up,” said Cody.

Cena’s heel turn only lasted a few months as he was a babyface again before his rematch with Rhodes at SummerSlam.

John Cena would spend the last half of his retirement tour as a babyface, before calling it a career in December.
