Farid Basharat: UFC Is Manufacturing A Fanbase That Doesn’t Appreciate Quality Fighting
Undefeated bantamweight Farid Basharat was released by the UFC over the weekend, stating that the company made the decision to not renew his contract.
Basharat is 16-0 in his career and 7-0 in the UFC. Six of his seven victories have come by decision.
Basharat uploaded a video to his YouTube channel, where he addressed his release from the promotion.
He stated that he didn’t think he fit the direction the company is going, noting they are looking for fighters who brawl and spill blood, while he fights more intelligently.
“I think the company, the UFC, is manufacturing a fan base that doesn’t appreciate good-quality fighting. Even if it’s a mismatch, even if it’s a low-level fight, as long as there’s blood, as long as it’s a first-round finish, we’re happy.
In my opinion, you just can’t build a sport off that because you might do well for a couple of years ratings-wise, but sooner or later it’s going to delegitimize the sport, and the fans are going to be left wanting high-quality fights.
When I see the best against the best, for me, that’s what’s entertaining. But the UFC is guaranteed 7.7 billion over the next seven years, so they’re clearly great at what they’re doing. So what do I know?”
Farid Basharat accuses the UFC of cultivating a fan base that values blood and finishes over high-level fighting, warning that the approach could damage the sport’s credibility.

Dana White said of Basharat’s departure, “If you’re 16-0 with seven wins in the UFC and don’t get signed, there’s definitely a reason.”
Basharat won his last fight at UFC 329, defeating John Garza by decision.
