“He is improving and continues to show us his heart and determination each day,” a family statement read. “He has a long road ahead of him and your continued thoughts and prayers will help him with the journey.”

Other reports have stated that Hughes has no broken bones or internal injuries, but has also been minimally responsive to various tests.

An investigation is still on going by the Illinois State Police, but there has been no ruling or statements made by the police department at this time.

Hughes’ family also wants the public to know that they believe the former welterweight champion will continue to make improvements.

“Matt has always been a fighter; but he is now in the biggest fight of his life,” the statement read. “We know he will continue to improve with God's Grace and Mercy.”

Prior to the accident, the former UFC fighter had been teasing a potential return to action.
