Eric Bischoff provides perhaps the coldest take of all when it comes to WCW video games.
During their operation as a professional wrestling organization, WCW released a total of 10 video games. The peak of these releases occurred during the Monday Night War. Seven WCW video games came out between 1997 and 2000. Each of these games varied greatly in quality. However, the consensus is that the games produced by AKI, which were released for the Nintendo 64, are the best of the bunch. Of those two games, “WCW/nWo Revenge,” released in 1998, is generally regarded as the best WCW video game of all time.
Now, Eric Bischoff is adding his reasons for why Revenge is his favorite video game from the WCW catalog. He admitted on the latest 83 Weeks episode that he just really dug the branding. He also acknowledged that he’s never really been a gamer.
“WCW/nWo Revenge. That’s just because it was really, it was like, wow, that’s kind of like the brand split, although I didn’t know the term brand split back when I was trying to figure out a way to give WCW one show and nWo another show; That video game was kind of a digital manifestation of that idea, so I guess that’s why it’s probably my favorite. Full disclosure: I’ve never played a video game in my life. I think I played Pong when it first came out, 1972 or whatever it was, when you could play it on your TV screen. Yeah, that was the last video game I played in 1972, so I don’t have any firsthand knowledge of gameplay, but from a branding perspective, and just the way it was promoted and the timing of it, that was a big one for us.”
