Alexander Gustafsson Wants DC To Defend Gold Against Him Or Relinquish The Title

Alexander Gustafsson is back in action next month at UFC 227, facing Volkan Oezdemir in a light heavyweight division encounter.

Daniel Cormier recently became a two division champion at UFC 226 and Gustafsson wants to see DC defend the light heavyweight strap or relinquish it altogether.

“He’s up there now; he has the heavyweight belt and he has the light heavyweight belt. He’s keeping the light heavyweight belt for himself, he doesn’t want to let it go. I don’t know what’s going on; he has to make up his mind and decide if he wants to come back down. I’m just going to beat Volkan and then I’m ready for him. Maybe he should just let that belt go and give it to us so we have something to fight for,” says Gustafsson on The MMA Hour.

It should be noted that Gustafsson has only fought twice since the first meeting with Cormier at UFC 192, while DC has five times since that encounter.

Gustafsson has another idea if DC doesn’t defend the 205 pound title, which is to create an UFC Interim Light Heavyweight Title.

“They should do this fight for an interim title,” he said. “Whenever DC makes up his mind…if he wants to come down we can fight for the real title. They should make this fight for the interim title, me and Volkan — that’s the No. 1 guy and the No 2 guy.”

UFC 227 takes place on Saturday, August 4 from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California with TJ Dillashaw and Cody Garbrandt headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
