Ben Askren Claims Nobody Would Care If Colby Covington Never Fights Again

Ben Askren is making his UFC debut this weekend at UFC 235, facing former UFC Welterweight Champion Robbie Lawler.

Former UFC Interim Welterweight Champion Colby Covington has threatened legal action and to possibly never fight again since being stripped of the title, but Askren doesn’t think anybody would care if Covington never fought again.

“Colby’s got no skills,” Askren said at a UFC 235 media lunch (via MMA Fighting). “He’s gotta fight. … If he doesn’t fight, I don’t think one person in the whole world will shed a tear. Like, thank god that era is over. I think the UFC made it more than it was, because if you look at any of his social media he doesn’t have that many followers. There was never that much of a ‘We want to see Colby!’ It just wasn’t there. It was staged.”

Kamaru Usman is getting the next shot at UFC Welterweight Champion Tyron Woodley, with that bout also taking place at UFC 235.

Askren says that Covington made himself look dumb by trusting people like UFC President Dana White.

“Colby was too dumb,” Askren said. “He thought the promoter was his friend. He thought, ‘Hey, he’s my buddy, he’s gonna do everything good for me. He’s gonna take care of me.’ … He looks so dumb and he continues to look dumb.”

UFC 235 takes place on Saturday, March 2 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada with Jon Jones and Anthony Smith headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
