Chael Sonnen Thinks DC Will Retire With UFC 226 Loss

UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier is challenging UFC Heavyweight Champion Stipe Miocic for the gold in the main event of UFC 226.

Chael Sonnen is under the impression that if DC loses at the event, it will mark the end of his professional MMA career.

“I’m not sure we see Daniel Cormier fight again,” Sonnen said on Beyond the Fight. “Interesting plot twist I just threw in there, isn’t it? So, he’s moved up to heavyweight. Let’s say he succeeds and he wins, he would then be the heavyweight champion. I suspect that he would relinquish 205 pounds. So, if he wins and he’s the heavyweight champion, I think that he would stick around and get that other fight in that he’s been talking about he wants, whoever that would be against.”

DC had previously stated that he wants to retire by March of 2019, even wanting to fight Brock Lesnar and Jon Jones before retiring.

Sonnen doesn’t even believe there are enough good fights for DC to take at light heavyweight, even though Cormier is the divisions champion.

“(There are) not a lot of compelling fights for him at 205 pounds,” Sonnen said. “That could change overnight with the insertion of Jon Jones, but I don’t think Jon’s gonna be back until next summer. That’s a year away.”

UFC 226 takes place on Saturday, July 7 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada with Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier headlining. Fightful is providing live coverage of the event, with a post-show podcast to follow.
