Charlie Edwards Cruises To Decision Against Angel Moreno In First Flyweight Title Defense

Charlie Edwards had no problems dominating Angel Moreno in his maiden defense of his WBC flyweight title.

Matchroom Boxing's latest trip to the Copper Box Arena in London featured Edwards retaining his title with a wide unanimous decision victory against Moreno, winning by unanimous decision with all three judges scoring the bout 120-107 in favor of Edwards. The fight headlined the card which was shown in the United States on DAZN.

From the start of the bout, Edwards' speed proved to be one of the deciding factors as Moreno wasn't able to dodge many of the champion's early punches. Edwards outboxed and outlanded Moreno early on and even bruised Moreno's a face a little bit during the fight. Edwards so comfortable and felt so non-threatened by the challenge Moreno brought that Edwards showboating and taunting his opponent in the fourth round, a tactic that drew the ire of his trainer when the round was over.

Afterwards, Edwards returned to outboxing Moreno and had plenty of success doing so. But that's not to say Moreno didn't do anything to pose any sort of challenge. Moreno had tried to brawl with Edwards since the early part of the fight, but with little success being that he was able to trap Edwards up against the ropes and very briefly work the body.

The icing on the cake on Edwards' night was a knockdown in the eighth round as he was able to hurt Moreno to the point where one of his gloves touched the canvas, forcing an automatic 10-count from the referee. After the knockdown, Edwards continued to cruise towards a successful first defense by winning the remaining rounds.

This was Edwards' first title defense since winning the belt last December when he won a decision against Cristofer Rosales. As far as Edwards' next fight is concerned, he will either have a rematch against Rosales or face mandatory challenger Julio Cesar Martinez. A unification bout against any of the other flyweight champions is also a possibility as both Edwards and promoter Eddie Hearn stated they would be interested in such a fight.
