Coach Wanted Derrick Lewis To Pull Out Of UFC Fight Night Wichita

Derrick Lewis competed in the main event of UFC Fight Night Wichita, suffering a second round TKO loss to former UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior Dos Santos.

A defeated Lewis apparently competed at the event with a myriad of injuries, which is why coach Bob Perez wanted him to pull out of the bout.

“I was like, ‘Dude, we’ve gotta pull,'” Perez told MMA Junkie Radio. “But Derrick’s like, ‘Hell no.'”

The full extent of Lewis’ injuries are unknown at this time, but it has been previously reported that Lewis may have entered the Octagon with serious knee issues.

Perez would like to have Lewis focus on one thing in the immediate future, which is to simply rest and relax before thinking about an Octagon return.

“I would like him to rest,” Perez said. “To heal his mind, to heal his body, and get everything better.”

There is no word at this time as to how long Lewis could be out of action for, but more should be known as the fighter heals up from the injuries. Lewis has now suffered two straight losses under the UFC banner, with the other coming to UFC Heavyweight Champion Derrick Lewis at UFC 230.
