Danny Roman has accomplished his dream of becoming world champion.
The 27-year-old Roman won the WBA "regular" super bantamweight champion by knocking out now-former champion Shun Kubo in the ninth round of their fight in Kyoto, Japan. Roman dropped Kubo twice in the seventh and eighth round, signifying the end of Kubo's short reign as champion. Roman cut Kubo over his left eye early in the seventh round, allowing Roman to score the two knockdowns.
Roman made good on his pre-fight promise that he would win the fight without the need of the judges picking a winner. Even if the fight had gone the distance, Roman was dominating the fight so much that he was winning the fight all three cards by a country mile (80-70, 80-70, 79-72).
"I said before the fight that I didn't intend for this to go to the judges," Roman said. "The plan was to knock him out and take the WBA title in dominating fashion. Words can't describe what I'm feeling right now. It's a dream come true."
Kubo, a former OBPF super bantamweight champion, won the WBA title in just his 12th professional fight when he stopped Nehomar Cermeno in the 11th round back in April.
The win marks 15 straight for the new world champion. Before the win over Kubo, Roman last fought on Showtime's "ShoBox: The Next Generation" show in January where he defeated Adam Lopez in the main event in a WBA title eliminator. Although Roman is a WBA world champion, Guillermo Rigondeaux holds the WBA's "super" super bantamweight title.
