Golovkin-Jacobs May be Headed to Purse Bid

The World Boxing Association is taking the correct steps in order to consolidate their belts, however it appears as if the brawl between WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady "GGG" Golovkin and WBA World middleweight champion Daniel Jacobs may have hit a momentary roadblock, per Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions.

According to Loeffler, who is the managing director of K2 promotions and manages Golovkin, claimed the two sides are still a good ways apart from making a deal, even going as far as to let the WBA know that it is unlikely for a deal to be struck and the fight should be put up for a purse bid.

Golovkin (36-0, 33 KO) was last seen in England knocking out challenger Kell Brook over 5 rounds on September 10th. He is currently chasing the record for most middleweight title defenses held by Bernard Hopkins, however Jacobs (32-1, 29 KO) would look to be Golovkin's toughest test to date and is a puncher who can actually stand and potentially trade with the Kazakh knockout artist. "GGG" has been chasing a fight with Canelo Alvarez for years now, however Golden Boy Promotions, who is over Alvarez, said that the fight will not take place until at least late in 2017. This leaves Golovkin to continue his path to unify all of the middleweight belts.

Jacobs, fighting out of Brooklyn, NY, has been on a tear ever since losing to Dmitry Pirog in 2010. Not only has he managed to dominate every opponent put in front of him, he has also overcome a bout with cancer and returned even stronger. He most recently looked insanely impressive knocking out opponent Sergio Mora in 7 rounds on a September 9th PBC telecast. He has been clamoring for the Golovkin fight and will finally get his wish, as the WBA mandated the bout on September 11th and gave them a 30 day window to come to terms, however the terms laid out by the organization, which is a 75-25 split, were not favorable for both parties.

With Canelo being out for the foreseeable future due to a fractured thumb in his most recent fight, the door has opened up for HBO to show another fight on December 10th, which will be the perfect platform for this fantastic middleweight scuffle. Going to a purse bid will serve to make Jacobs more for his efforts and will still allow whichever promoter that wants to pay the most to have an opportunity to showcase the talented fighters.
