Former UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre was set to return to action after a four year absence to challenge UFC Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping for the gold. Then the fight was promptly canceled by UFC President Dana White.
GSP still wants to meet Bisping in the Octagon and not just beat the champion, but to retire him as well.
“I want to be the one that retires him,” St. Pierre told TSN. “He’s got the most wins (in UFC history). I don’t want him to win again because he beat my record, and I’m the one that had the record before. He’s got one over me. I’m going to beat him and then win another few more. Then I’m 36, so it will be time to retire after a few more.”
Both fighters are dealing with injuries at the moment because GSP is dealing with an injured eye, while Bisping is dealing with a knee injury.
While GSP still holds out hope for the fight to take place, the former welterweight champion does admit it’s a big risk to fight the British star.
“Big risk, big reward. Fighting Michael Bisping, that’s what it gives me. … He said we’ll figure it out. We’ll see what happens,” says GSP.
UFC President Dana White also stated recently that when GSP does return to action, then it would be a welterweight title fight granted to the fighter instead of a middleweight title shot.
