Jorge Masvidal Willing To Fight Teammate Colby Covington

Jorge Masvidal hasn’t competed since a historical five second knockout win over Ben Askren at UFC 239.

Former UFC Interim Welterweight Champion Colby Covington is a teammate of Masvidal’s at American Top Team (ATT) and Masvidal would fight him if the opportunity arose.

“Even if we were brothers, if the money is right, it’s just a fight,” Masvidal said backstage at UFC 241 (via Nolan King of MMA Junkie). “Nobody is going to die. What the (expletive)? What did we sign up here for? To high five and (expletive)? Yo, I was No. 1 and you were No. 2, or whatever? No, I signed up to be No. 1 and that’s it.”

Covington is expected to face UFC Welterweight Champion Kamaru Usman later this year, but nothing is set in stone at this time.

Masvidal believes a potential fight against Covington would give him the opportunity to play the role of a hero.

“I’d love to be, but I’ve never been a superhero,” Masvidal said. “I’m more of a gooned out (expletive). Colby has to slow down at some point. He knows I’m not a superhero – I’m more of a super goon, at least in the real life (expletive).”

The surging fighter currently sits at #3 in the UFC Welterweight Division and Covington is just one spot ahead of him in those rankings.
