Lee Selby got sweet revenge on Jonathan Victor Barros, retaining his IBF featherweight title in a fight almost a year in the making.
Selby defeated Barros via unanimous decision (117-110, 117-110, 119-108) on the undercard of the Chris Eubank Jr. vs. Arthur Abraham fight. Selby had to fight Barros under a heavy heart because his mother passed away the week of the fight. Selby dominated the fight with Barros never finding a consistent rhythm all fight long. Barros suffered his first loss since losing to current lightweight world champion Mikey Garcia in 2012.
The two were supposed to fight back in January, but Barros missed weight on the day before the fight and it was canceled. Selby instead fought Andoni Gago in March in a non-title fight, of which Selby won via ninth-round stoppage. Selby said he wants to fight Carl Frampton, who wrapped up a WBA featherweight title series against Leo Santa Cruz. Frampton won the first fight, but lost the second fight, and is now fighting Andres Gutierrez on July 29.
Also on the undercard, Martin Joseph Ward retained the British super featherweight title and won the vacant Commonwealth title with an unanimous decision win over Anthony Cacace, on scores of 115-114, 116-113, and 116-114. Ward is now undefeated in 20 professional fights.
Selby vs. Barros was just one of several major world title fights on July 15, including Miguel Berchelt vs. Takashi Miura and Jezreel Corrales vs. Robinson Castellano.
