Matchroom Boxing Announces U.S. Return, Julio Cesar Martinez, Cecilia Braekhus In Title Fights

Matchroom Boxing is coming back to the United States with two world title fights.

The promotion announced that it will have a boxing card, to be streamed on DAZN in the United States, in Tulsa, Oklahoma on August 15.

The main event of that card is a WBC flyweight title fight between Julio Cesar Martinez and McWilliams Arroyo. Martinez has held the WBC title since last December when he stopped Cristofer Rosales and later defended it back in February with a stoppage win over Jay Harris. Arroyo has won three straight since a loss to current WBO super flyweight champion Kazuto Ioka back in 2018.

The co-main event bout will see undisputed welterweight champion Cecilia Braekhus defending her titles against current unified WBA and WBC junior welterweight champion Jessica McCaskill. Originally, the fight was supposed to take place in April in Maryland, but the entire event was canceled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

In undercard news, unbeaten junior welterweight Shakhram Giyasov will fight Francisco Rojo for the WBA International title. In addition, Raymond Ford, Nikita Ababiy, Marc Castro will all be in action in separate fights.

The announcement comes days after it was announced that Matchroom Boxing will return with a four-card series starting in August and ending with a heavyweight fight between Dillian Whyte and Alexander Povetkin.

Matchroom Boxing is the latest promotion to reveal plans of holding events in the United States. Top Rank Boxing has been doing several shows in Las Vegas and Golden Boy Promotions is planning a fight card in July.
